Car Accidents and Massage

When you’re in an auto accident (car, motorcycle, or another type of motor vehicle), not only is it a headache to deal with, but you’re also often left in pain. What many people don’t realize is that your car insurance covers a variety of therapies such as massage, chiropractic, physical therapy, and more.

It’s important to seek medical care shortly after your accident (whether you are in severe pain or simply noticing that you’re feeling a bit sore) because the implications a car accident of any size can have on your body are a pain (literally). What we see in the massage community repeatedly is clients dealing with chronic pain in their neck and back after being in a collision anywhere from a few years ago to decades. And unfortunately, because they never sought care after the accident, they’re now having to pay for it years later (both financially and dealing with the pain).

Getting ahead of the pain, and taking advantage of the coverage you pay monthly, is ideal for your long-term health. Seeking out care — whether it be massage, chiropractic, physical therapy (or a combination of these therapies) — will be your best bet to avoid long-term neck pain and back pain.

Upon contacting your insurance company and receiving a claim number, you’ll be considered a Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) or Personal Injury (PI) case. (If you are not local to Lane County (Springfield and Eugene, Oregon), we suggest that you search for these terms or get recommendations from your primary care physician or chiropractor to find a massage therapist that works on these types of cases. Not all massage therapists bill for medical massage.)

Medical massage is target-based massage, primarily applying a specific treatment targeted to certain problem areas. This type of massage is usually offered after a Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA)/Personal Injury (PI) or other whiplash injuries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does car insurance cover massage?

Yes! When you’re in a car accident that leaves you in pain (whether minor or severe), your car insurance will often cover massage – as well as other therapies.

Should I seek care if I have neck pain or back pain after an auto accident?

Yes! Get ahead of your pain by seeking a healthcare professional – such as your primary care doctor or chiropractor. They’ll be able to refer you to massage therapists (including us at Resilience Medical Massage), physical therapists and other therapies in order to get you feeling better. Whether your pain is minor or major, you will thank yourself in the long run by avoiding chronic neck and back pain as a result of the accident.

Can I get massage covered if I was in a motorcycle accident?

Yes, your insurance will cover your massage appointments if you were in an accident (as long as your motorcycle is covered on your plan).

Do I have to see a doctor in order to get a massage after a car accident?

Yes, sort of. You can see your primary physician or a chiropractor to receive a referral to get massage covered from your car accident. Even if you don’t have insurance or are not interested in using it, massage therapists will require a referral to ensure that it is safe to work on your recently injured body. In rare instances, massage can cause harm if we apply pressure or traction on a body with unknown cervical, thoracic, or lumbar spine injuries.

Do I have to see a chiropractor in order to get massage covered after an accident? I don’t like chiropractors.

No, you can just see a massage therapist or physical therapist. You will likely need to see your primary physician, though, in order to get a referral to receive massage therapy after a car accident. At Resilience, we don’t have a chiropractor on staff and we’re happy to work with you on your road to recovery.
